SHATTERPROOF Thriving After Domestic Abuse

I’m Mickie Zada and I lived in abuse…for 34 years…from age 19 until I was 53. I believe we create our realities, and I chose to stay in a damaging relationship for so long because I thought it was my Calling. I was wrong. I changed me. I am now an enthusiastic participant in Life. “The words ‘I am’ are potent words; be careful what you hitch them to. The thing you’re claiming has a way of reaching back and claiming you.” A.L. Kitselman I am a strong woman, a fabulous woman, over 60 years old. I am a Change-agent. I am an encourager. I am uniquely qualified to speak to living in abuse, getting out and surviving to the fullest extent. I know what it takes. I know the fear. I am a survivor. I am a coach. I am happy to have these “I Am” words to reach back and claim me! The actions I teach and share are those that I’ve learned in my Journey from choosing to live in abuse to choosing to create my authentic life; safe, sound, Real. I invite you to read through this web page. Think about who I Am. Read blogs, listen to some podcasts, watch live videos. Do we connect? I am open and exposed. Choose to reach out to me or not. What I know for sure is that I lived the life of abuse, and got out, and I’ve thrived, to serve as a beacon to other women. If you live in abuse, or you’ve recently escaped, it’s my Mission to support and encourage you to choose and live a healthy life. The materials, the tools, the support is here. It’s your responsibility to grab hold and change yourself, from the in-side out.

Need some inspiration?  It’s right here! Just days into retirement, Louise’s husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.  He passed away 2 years later.  She didn’t sit back and feel sorry for herself.  On the long nights when she couldn’t sleep, Louise planned fantasy trips. And, her survival therapy was to bring two of those trips to life; a trek on Camino de Santiago and immersion in an intense Spanish class in Spain.  You’ll laugh and smile through this fun conversation!

Synchronicity is the result of meaningful coincidences;  meaningful coincidences have created changes in Mickie’s podcast!  No more playing small…Today she stood at a milestone in her Life and decided it was time, again, to move from Where she was to Who she is.

Muhammad Ali said “It isn't the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it's the pebble in your shoe.”  Unhealthy life lessons, thoughts that undermine each of us reaching our true potential, are the pebbles in our shoes.  Soon those pebbles become rocks that weigh us down on our climb to the summit of success.  Mickie discusses those rocks each of us carry in our metaphoric backpack.  She identifies three different types of people and how they deal with their rocks…which are you?

In this episode Mickie asks, “What happens when you decide to break those long-held life patterns…what if you decide NOT to live your life the way everyone else has.”

Everyone in your family smokes so you smoked.  Everyone in your family went to college, so you went to college.  Everyone in your family got married and had children, so you did, too.  And, NOBODY got divorced.

The only thing consistent in life is change.  Don’t let it freak you out!

For 25 years my guest, Tracy Dill, lived with eating disorders controlling her life.  Hear this survivor describe waking every morning thinking she did not deserve to eat; her days consumed with thoughts of how to “get rid of” the food she did allow herself; constant validation, in her mind, for hours of exercise to burn “unnecessary” calories.  Listen to how it all started and how Tracy moved from Where she was to Who she is.  This is an eye-opening conversation.

Mickie uses her life experiences to illustrate the fact that the importance of achieving goals is about how we want to feel.  It’s not about getting the new job or sculpting our bodies…it’s about how having that job or that “look” will make us feel.  Here’s validation that setting a goal isn’t enough;  emotion drives action and success.

Aug 3, 2016

Mickie’s youngest sister, Judi, is her guest.  Together they explore memories and perceptions of their upbringing with ten years difference in their ages.  Theirs was a PTA/stay at home Mom who did not drive, as Mickie grew up; she was a long working hours career Mom with pierced ears and a drivers license in Judy’s memory!  Listen as they discuss different perspectives yet how their Second 53 Years are still quite similar.

One of the things dying people regrets that they didn’t allow themselves to be happy.  Recent polls report that fewer people are happy now than in the past several years.  But, it turns out that those of us over 50 are in the happiest group.  Mickie discusses her reasoning behind this fact and shares a story about the discovery of the secret to happiness.

It was Satchel Paige who said “Don’t Look Back…something might be gaining on you!”  Mickie explores how our past, especially in our second 53 years, may be holding us back from creating the future we envision. Even past accomplishments and success can be allowed to hinder our future plans: an interesting perspective.

Mickie has known this week’s guest for about 10 years…Mickie has known her as Tammy.  In Tammy’s personal evolution to move from Where she was to Who she is, she recently chose to change her name to Alex.  Alex, like Mickie, could be a male name…it’s not about that.  Alex is all woman…she’s chosen to move to a new town and make a fairly fresh start. As it happens, about 12 years ago Mickie legally changed her last name to one of her choice: Zada.  What’s in a Name?  A Lot!

Jun 8, 2016

Mickie read that people in their 50’s and 60’s are no longer concerned with what other people think about them:  they are wise enough to know that other people don’t think about them much anyway!  Concern about what other people think is perfectly normal at any age…if you sometimes wonder about other people’s opinions of you, Mickie offers 7 suggestions to stop those thoughts.

Listen to bits and pieces of Mickie’s life story.  Life is what we make it; our choices do create our Reality; Stay open to nudges from the Universe (God).  Mickie says, since she was 3 years old, she “always knew this adventure we call Life would be a success”, but not without some setbacks, hurts and disappointments.  Choose to consider how your experiences have created who you are today.

May 18, 2016

Mickie isn’t sure why the Google article about gracefully turning 60 made her so angry.  Discussing the article’s 11 suggestions and her thoughts about them helped her realize aging gracefully is really about choosing to live our Real Lives.

May 11, 2016

When a great opportunity comes along, we usually say “Yeah But…that won’t work because….”  Mickie shares life experiences that have created who she is today; how they hindered her growth and how she chose to out-grow them.  Don’t wait for things to get easier, simpler, better, you’ll run out of time.

Don’t turn away from this show, just because you’re not a golfer!
(The things Mickie talks about apply to non-golfers, too!) This podcast idea is the result of one unusual round of golf…She addresses life changing on a dime, women’s determination to succeed (good enough vs Type A), and integrity.

Apr 27, 2016

She learned a shocking Reality and that Truth created a huge challenge.  Keeping her eye on the horizon, on her goal…she explains how the gremlins of doubt and self-sabotage will not derail her focus on better health.
